Toxic Trade: The Case of Electronic Waste and the Basel
Mr. Puckett will explore the issue of toxic trade through the lens of electronic waste trade and he will provide the context, history, evolution and relevance of the Basel Convention — one of the world’s landmark multilateral environmental agreements. The Basel Convention is not an esoteric United Nations treaty, but is relevant to anyone who owns a computer or cell phone. The effects of globalization and free trade on electronic waste will be explored and the life cycle of electronic products, unseen by consumers, will be revealed as unsustainable, economically inefficient and impacting some of the most vulnerable peoples on earth. Mr. Puckett will also discuss the role of individuals in preventing the Digital Dump.
